Streamlabs bets IRL streamers will pay to stop dropping frames

Network Boost bundles bonded connectivity into a subscription, undercutting the hardware IRL streamers used to buy for the same job.

If you stream from the street, a convention floor or a moving car, the thing most likely to end your broadcast isn't a bad take, it's a dead signal. Tubefilter reports that Streamlabs is going after that problem with Network Boost, a feature for its Ultra subscribers that juggles Wi-Fi, cellular and hotspot connections and switches to whichever one is holding up. The interesting part isn't the technology, which already exists in other forms. It's that Streamlabs is turning connectivity insurance into a recurring line on a creator's subscription bill.

What IRL streamers used to do instead

Reliable outdoor streaming has never been a solved problem for creators on a budget. The usual fix was hardware: a bonding device or dedicated encoder that combines several cellular modems into one steadier pipe, so a single weak bar doesn't kill the feed. That gear works, but it costs money up front, needs its own SIM cards and data plans, and adds one more thing to carry and configure before you go live.

Streamlabs is pitching Network Boost as the app-based alternative to all of that. Per the company's own description, the setup pairs a primary streaming device with relay devices and manages the handoff between connections inside the Streamlabs mobile app. For a creator who already lives in that app for overlays and alerts, the appeal is not having to learn or buy anything new.

Why the timing tracks

This lands while the audience for outdoor streaming is genuinely growing. Twitch's IRL category has been around for roughly a decade, and Streamlabs cites Twitch's figure that watch time on those streams nearly tripled year over year in 2025. When more viewers are watching people broadcast from public universities, theme parks and clubs, more mid-sized creators start attempting the format, and those are exactly the people who can't easily justify dedicated bonding hardware. A subscription feature is aimed straight at that middle tier.

It also fits crowded-venue streaming, where the problem isn't a weak signal so much as thousands of phones fighting for the same towers. A creator at a concert or a sporting event can, in theory, lean on whichever path is least jammed at that moment. That is a real use case the hardware crowd has always had to plan around.

The catch worth naming

The obvious limit is that Network Boost is gated behind Streamlabs Ultra. Bonded connectivity as a subscription means your ability to stay live depends on keeping that subscription active, and it locks that reliability to one company's software rather than a device you own outright. Creators who already pay for Ultra get it as a bonus; creators who don't now have another reason to subscribe, which is presumably the point.

There's also the unglamorous reality that switching between connections still depends on at least one of them being decent. If cellular, Wi-Fi and your hotspot are all saturated in the same crowded room, no software layer conjures bandwidth that isn't there. And the moving-vehicle case that Streamlabs itself floats carries a safety cost the software can't manage. The honest read is that this makes good connectivity cheaper and simpler to reach, not that it makes dropped streams disappear.
